FANTASTIC
Mark Towriss Bursary Fund
received £30,000 since February 2009
THANK YOU - for all donations and messages of support!
In July Liz(left) and John Mitchell held a sunny garden party which raised £1,000 and gave 60 people a delicious curry lunch in their pretty garden. We were joined by a delightful Kenyan, Dr Anne Kamere (centre) planning to do family medine. She gave us insight into the responsibilities of a junior Kenyan doctor in a district hospital: she had undertaken over 100 caesariens by the end of her first year as a doctor!Ute Towriss(right)
In September we received an astounding £1,000 donation from an ex-patient.
In November received a very handsome Steiff bear from the Thompson family to be raffled in 2012.
In December Cambridge Hills Road Sixth Form College have chosen to dedicate their Christmas concert collection to the Mark Towriss Bursary Fund. Three of Mark's children attended this college. We are very grateful for the College Student Council for their nomination - and to Dr Mike Carrington for his support.
These donations have enabled our second bursary scholar, Dr Roland Kibet Towett, to start in September - and we now have funds to offer a third bursary in September 2012.
Dr Towett grew up close to one of the family medicine training hospitals, Tenwek. He graduated from Moi University in 2008, did internship at Tenwek 2009 and was highly regarded. He requested transfer down to Longisa sub-district hospital near Tenwek. He was interested in family medicine as far back as internship. He is sponsored by Tenwek Hospital, and will be bonded to Tenwek afterwards, serving as the first Kenyan family doc at Tenwek to teach future registrars.
Meanwhile Drs Hibble and Tilunius returned to Kenya in August to support the development of an East African Association of Medical Educators. There were representatives from the Ministry of Education, from Uganda and Rwanda. They also met with family doctors and worked on faculty development at Tenwek hospital. Dr Hibble continues to work on the project OOPE(Out of Programme Education) to enable Cambridge GP registrars to spend a year in a Kenyan district hospital alongside other family doctors - providing medical support and extending their own learning.
Lastly on a personal note; I look forward to learning more about family medicine in Kenya from my daughter Catriona Towriss who will be working for 6 months at Nairobi University on her PhD, from February 2012.
